Thousand Oaks High rallied in the closing minutes of the second half to beat Santa Paula, 2-1, and advance into today’s second round of the Simi Valley Soccer Tournament.

The game was scoreless at the half, but Joe Magdaleno Jr. shot a goal through a crowd of players early in the second half to give Santa Paula a 1-0 lead.

Thousand Oaks (9-2) controlled the ball during most of the half, but mistakes and a tough Santa Paula defense kept the Lancers from scoring. Santa Paula goalie Dale Hendrix intercepted two sharp shots on goal at the beginning of the half.

With less than 10 minutes left to play, Erik Maki of Thousand Oaks took a pass from teammate Paul McCully and fired the ball past Hendrix to tie the game at 1-1.

Minutes later, a midfield kick was bobbled by Hendrix. Mike Trevathan of Thousand Oaks, who was right on top of the Santa Paula goalie, kicked the loose ball in for the winning score. They were the first goals scored on Santa Paula (5-1-1) in six games.

Even though his team lost, Santa Paula Coach Joe Magdaleno was impressed with its performance. Santa Paula is a 1-A team, while Thousand Oaks is 4-A in Southern Section.

“Some of these 1-A teams are deceptive,” Lancers Coach Jerry Sawitz said afterward. “They are a tough team.”

Each of the 32 teams in the tournament played two first-round games on Thursday. Winners of both games move to the second round of the championship bracket, while losers of one game move to the consolation bracket. Losers of both first-round games are eliminated.

Thousand Oaks won its first game over Alemany, 3-1, and will play Santa Monica today at 11 a.m. Santa Monica was a 2-1 winner over St. Bonaventure in the first game and a 2-0 winner over Nordhoff in the second game.

Simi Valley 2, Beverly Hills 1--The second first-round game was scoreless through the first half, but a penalty kick by Simi Valley’s Steve MacKenzie put the Pioneers ahead midway through the second half.

Beverly Hills rallied and tied the game on a shot by Memo Kahan, who took the ball past two Simi Valley defenders for the score. It was Kahan’s third shot on goal in the half.

The game was still tied by the end of regulation, so it came down to the best of five penalty kicks for each team.

Kahan put the first shot through, but it was the only goal Beverly Hills could manage against Simi Valley goalie Steve Bame. Martin Fraye, Bruce Burnham and Robert Harris each scored a goal for Simi Valley.

Simi Valley, which beat Oak Park, 3-0, in the first game, will play Chaminade in round two today at 11 a.m.

Calabasas 1, South Pasadena 0--Calabasas, a 1-A school, played tough defense in the second half of the second game to earn a shot in the second round championship bracket. The Coyotes beat Palos Verdes, 1-0, in their first game.

The Coyotes’ lone goal against South Pasadena was scored in the first half by Poe Allan. Allan, Calabasas’ leading scorer with eight goals this season, managed to get the ball and break unopposed toward the net. South Pasadena goalie Toby Knudsen came from the net to make a play, but Allan lifted a soft shot over his head that bounced in the net for the score.

“Our defense did a good job,” said Calabasas Coach John Reich. “But this game was nothing to write home about.”

Calabasas (5-1-2) will play Royal in the second round today at 11 a.m.

Agoura 2, Hart 1--A goal by Agoura’s Mike Nielsen with 24:25 left in the second half broke a 1-1 tie and kept the Chargers in contention to defend last year’s tournament championship.

Agoura’s defense did the rest, breaking up key scoring attempts by Hart late in the game.

Agoura, which beat La Canada, 1-0, in the first game, will play Oxnard in the second round championship game today at 11 a.m.
