Postage Stamp Dedicated to Jack London
GLEN ELLEN, Calif. — Jack London fans, history buffs and stamp collectors turned out Saturday for ceremonies dedicating a postage stamp to the prolific writer.
“It was really quite an event for a town like this,” said Kip Fogarty of the North Bay Postal Service.
London, who wrote such novels as “The Call of the Wild” and “The Sea-Wolf,” did much of his work at a small ranch not far from the Dunbar Elementary School in Glen Ellen, where the ceremonies were held.
Almost 900 people flocked to the small Sonoma County community about 50 miles north of San Francisco, Fogarty said. He described the crowd as a mix of local children and Jack London readers, stamp dealers and history buffs.
Nancy George, executive assistant to the U.S. postmaster general, dedicated the stamp that places London in the company of Emily Dickinson, Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne, all of whom have been honored by stamps in the “Great American” series.
