Chicago State Beats USIU as Late Rally Falls Short

United States International University gave up more than 100 points for the seventh time this season as it lost, 115-100, to Chicago State Tuesday night in a men’s basketball game in Chicago.

Chicago State led, 63-50, at halftime and was ahead by as many as 25 points midway through the second half before USIU launched a brief comeback bid.

Darron Brittman scored 30 points to lead the Cougars, who improved their record to 12-5. Chicago State has won 65 consecutive games at home.

Shawn Bell added 22 points for Chicago State. Fred Shepard had 16 points and 10 assists and Paul Beene had 14 points and Stanley Jones 10.

USIU was led by 30 points and 11 rebounds from Duane Cross. Joe Yezbak added 27 for the Gulls and Charles Redding scored 15, with 2 field goals and 11 free throws in 12 attempts.

The game was marked by 57 fouls, 31 on Chicago State, and one technical foul on the USIU bench.

The Gulls made 32 of 43 free throws, and Cougars made 27 of 35.

The Gulls, who fell to 7-8, resume action Thursday at Southwest Texas State.

USIU has a rematch with Chicago State Jan. 30 in San Diego.

The last time Chicago State lost at home was in January, 1981.
