Two Peruvian sailors who jumped ship off Los Angeles Harbor on Saturday and were rescued after three hours in the ocean will be questioned by federal immigration officials today. “I have never heard of this before,” Immigration and Naturalization Inspector John Wilson said. “Normally, crewmen will wait until their ship docks and then abscond.” The two unidentified men, ages 29 and 33, told authorities they wanted to take family members living in the United States back to Peru. The men were aboard the ship Kipu outbound from the harbor when they jumped into the waters off Point Fermin, the Coast Guard said. Another Peruvian ship picked them up. That ship is to dock today. Both Coast Guard and immigration officials said the men did not ask for asylum in the United States.
