The World : U.S. Vetoes Anti-Israel Plan
The United States vetoed an Arab-backed U.N. Security Council resolution that would have strongly deplored Israeli “acts which have violated the sanctity” of Muslim shrines in Jerusalem. Thirteen other Security Council members, including Washington’s European allies and Australia, supported the resolution, which said the alleged Israeli provocations “constitute a serious obstruction” to peace. The latest dispute began Jan. 8 when a group of Israeli members of Parliament visited the Temple Mount, sacred to Muslims and Jews, ostensibly to check on reports of unauthorized Muslim construction.
