Space Program Still Popular, Poll Finds
Associated Press
NEW YORK — The space shuttle program is still strongly supported by most Americans, an ABC News poll conducted since the loss of the Challenger shows.
The poll, based on interviews with more than 500 people, found that 79% of them still supported the shuttle program, 16% opposed it and 5% had no opinion, said Elise Adde, ABC news division spokeswoman.
She said that 72% of those surveyed wanted to continue including civilians--such as teacher Christa McAuliffe--on shuttle crews, 22% were opposed to the idea and 5% expressed no opinion.
