Brad Gilbert upset fifth-seeded Anders Jarryd of Sweden, 7-6, 6-0, Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the $465,000 U.S. Pro Indoor tennis championships at Philadelphia.

After trailing, 3-5, in the first set, Gilbert rallied to win 10 of the last 11 games. Jarryd had two set points while ahead, 5-4, in the first set. But he lost them and his serve as Gilbert forced the tiebreaker.

Jarryd twisted his left ankle in the tiebreaker and could do nothing in the second set.

Top-seeded Ivan Lendl and second-seeded Jimmy Connors also advanced, winning third-round matches. Lendl beat 16th-seeded Greg Holmes, 6-2, 6-2, while Connors ousted Slobodan Zivojinovic of Yugoslavia, 6-1, 7-6.

At Key Biscayne, Fla., top-seeded Chris Evert Lloyd routed Carling Bassett of Canada, 6-1, 6-0, to reach the quarterfinals of a $250,000 Virginia Slims tournament.

Bassett, seeded ninth, started the match serving a love game, but Lloyd won the final 12 games and the match in just 55 minutes.

“I don’t think I could have played much better than I did tonight,” Lloyd said.
