Nelson Research & Development Co. of Irvine said it has been issued a federal patent for a drug with potential for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and glaucoma. Dr. Eric L. Nelson, the company’s chairman and president, said clinical testing of the drug will begin soon but that it will be “a few years” before it will be eligible for sale on the open market. He predicted a growing demand for medicine to treat Parkinson’s disease and glaucoma because both diseases are associated with older people, who constitute an increasingly larger segment of the population.
