Skiing Roundup : World Cup Race Won by Petrovic

Yugoslavia’s Rok Petrovic had the two best runs Sunday in winning his third World Cup race this season in a tough slalom competition at Wengen, Switzerland.

Skiing aggressively on what is rated as perhaps the most difficult course on the circuit, Petrovic, 19, had a combined time of 1 minute 31.14 seconds for the two runs featuring 55 and 56 gates on a vertical drop of 550 meters (511 feet).

Didier Bouvet of France finished second in 1:32.34 and was followed by Bojan Krizaj of Yugoslavia in 1:32.76.

The best American finisher was Tiger Shaw of Stowe, Vt. He placed 10th in 1:34.83.

At Crans-Montana, Switzerland, Katrin Gutensohn of Austria mastered a tricky downhill course for her third World Cup victory of the season, easily beating runner-up Maria Walliser of Switzerland.

Gutensohn, 19, covered the fast, icy Piste Nationale in 1:27.64. Walliser was timed in 1:28.36 on the 2,227-meter (7,349-foot) slope and moved to the top of the overall women’s World Cup standings with 184 points. She moved past teammate Erika Hess, a slalom specialist who did not compete Sunday. Hess has 176 points.

Another Swiss, Zoe Haas, was third, in 1:28.55.

Holly Flanders of Deerfield, N.H., was the best American, placing 20th in 1:30.65.

At Angel Fire, N.M., Edvin Halsnes of Norway defeated Gunnar Grassl of Sweden in a pro dual giant slalom. Halsnes, the top-ranked racer on the Peugeot Grand Prix Pro Tour, won the final two runs by .187 seconds and .058 seconds, respectively.

At Steamboat Springs, Colo., U.S. ski team member Mike Holland came through on his second try to win the 90-meter jump in the Subaru National Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined Championships. Holland, of Norwich, Vt., soared 113 meters for the longest jump of the day and his total of 225.2 points topped hometown favorite and fellow U.S. team member Rick Mewborn.
