Beverly Hills’ ‘Indignation’
I would like to register my dissent with your editorial, which condemned Beverly Hills for requesting that the South African government remove its consulate. It seems to me that the action by that city is actually long overdue.
Your editorial argues that we should keep the lines of communication open with South Africa. We have had open communications for decades, and look where it has gotten us! Perhaps ridding ourselves of complicity with the current apartheid regime will have more impact.
The adverse publicity that the South African government is struggling against has forced some concessions to world opinion. We should keep up the pressure. If they have to relocate their embassy to, say, Bakersfield, it would suit the people of the Los Angeles metropolitan area just fine. We don’t want them, and the South African government surely deserves it.
