Pacific 10 Roundup : Welp Leads Washington Over Oregon State
Chris Welp scored 21 points Friday night to lead Washington to a 65-55 victory over Oregon State at Seattle.
Washington improved to 15-9 overall and took undisputed possession of first place in the Pacific 10 Conference with a 9-3 record, a half-game ahead of Arizona. Oregon State, dropping its fourth straight game, slipped to 9-11 and 5-6.
The Huskies led, 39-27, at halftime as Welp scored 15 points, and built a 61-42 advantage with 8:17 to play.
The bigger and stronger Huskies outrebounded the Beavers, 45-25. Washington’s Shag Williams had a game-high 12 rebounds, and also had 5 assists and 5 steals.
Oregon State opened in a man-to-man defense but was unable to stop Welp inside, and switched to a zone defense in the second half.
Jose Ortiz led the Beavers with 11 points.
Washington State 75, Oregon 71--Senior guard Chris Winkler scored a team-high 19 points, making eight of eight free throws in the second half, to lead the Cougars to victory at Pullman, Wash.
Winkler made 13 of 14 foul shots as Washington State moved to 6-6 in the conference and 13-12 overall. Oregon fell to 3-9 and 8-14.
