Three Playoff Games Are Set for Tonight
SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Section boys’ basketball postseason picture will become clearer tonight when three leagues hold special one-game playoffs.
In the 3-A division, City Eastern League co-champions Morse (8-2, 16-5) and Serra (8-2, 20-3) will play at 6 p.m. at Hoover High School to determine who will be the league’s No. 1 playoff representative.
In the 2-A division, Hoover (6-4, 11-13) and St. Augustine (6-4, 12-10) tied for second in the City Central League and will play at 7 p.m. at St. Augustine to determine who will be the league’s No. 2 playoff entry. The loser will not participate in the postseason tournament.
Kearny (8-2, 17-9) and University (8-2, 16-8) will play at 7:45 p.m. at University City to decide who will be the the No. 2 representative from the City Western League. Kearny and University finished in a three-way tie for first with La Jolla, but La Jolla won a coin flip Thursday and will be the City Western’s No. 1 representative.
Here is a list of the other teams that have qualified for the playoffs:
3-A: Grossmont League--1. El Capitan, 2. Mount Miguel. Metro-Mesa League--1. Sweetwater, 2. Montgomery.Palomar League--1. Poway, 2. Mount Carmel.
2-A: Avocado League--1. El Camino, 2. Oceanside. City Central League--1. Lincoln. Metro-South Bay League--1. Castle Park.
The only league with an open playoff berth is the Metro-South Bay. Marian (4-8) is in second place, but plays Castle Park (12-0) tonight. If Marian loses and Mar Vista (3-9) beats Southwest (2-9, 2-20), Marian and Mar Vista would meet in a playoff game Saturday night at a neutral site with the remaining playoff spot.
