NHL Roundup : Jets Keep the Nordiques Out of First Place, 4-2

Defenseman Randy Carlyle scored the tie-breaking goal 34 seconds into the final period as the Winnipeg Jets prevented the Quebec Nordiques from moving into a first-place tie with Montreal in the Adams Division with a 4-2 victory Sunday at Winnipeg.

The Jets fell behind, 2-0, in the first period, but turned the game around with four straight goals. Dave Ellett pulled Winnipeg even by scoring with 27 seconds left in the second period.

Dale Hawerchuk scored an insurance goal at 12:20 of the third period. Thomas Steen assisted on the last three goals.

Goals 30 seconds apart by Gord Donnelly and John Anderson gave Quebec a 2-0 lead midway in the first period. Ron Wilson, just recalled from Sherbrooke of the American League, cut Quebec’s lead to 2-1 with a short-handed goal at 12:13.

Chicago 6, Calgary 2--Goalie Murray Bannerman stopped 35 of 37 shots Sunday and center Denis Savard collected his 400th career assist as the Blackhawks turned back the Flames at Chicago.

With its fifth victory in the last seven games, Chicago remained six points ahead of second-place St. Louis in the Norris Division. The defeat was only Calgary’s fourth in the last 17 games, during which the Flames, second in the Smythe Division, are 9-4-4.

Keith Brown and Doug Wilson scored two minutes apart near the end of the first period to give Chicago a 2-0 lead, and Calgary never got back into the game.

Goals by Al Secord, his 35th, and Marc Bergevin made it 4-0 in the second period. Savard assisted on Secord’s goal. Bannerman’s bid for his second shutout of the season was ended by Gary Suter at 16:10 of the period.

Chicago’s Tom Lysiak and Troy Murray closed out the scoring after Neil Sheehy cut Calgary’s deficit to 4-2 early in the final period.

Minnesota 4, Toronto 3--Scott Bjugstad had a power-play goal and an assist as the North Stars built up a four-goal lead and held off the Maple Leafs at Bloomington, Minn.

Dennis Maruk, Dino Ciccarelli and Willi Plett scored in the first period as Minnesota jumped to a 3-0 lead, and Bjugstad scored on a power play at 1:19 of the second period.

Toronto cut the North Stars’ margin to 4-2 on goals by Walt Poddubny and Rick Vaive in the second period. Rookie Wendell Clark scored his 22nd goal at 11:53 in the third period pull the Maple Leafs within a goal.

North Stars’ goalie Don Beaupre, who had 32 saves, stopped the rally right there.

St. Louis 8, Hartford 2--Doug Gilmour scored three goals for the first time in his NHL career, and Mark Hunter added his second hat trick as the Blues routed the Whalers at Hartford.

Goalie Greg Millen made 26 saves while Bernie Federko added three assists as the Blues improved to 5-2 in their last seven games. The slumping Whalers lost their third straight game and are 2-11-1 mark since Jan. 25.

Sylvain Turgeon had his 37th goal and Stewart Gavin added his 19th for Hartford. Doug Evans scored his first NHL goal and Rick Meagher also scored for St. Louis.

Buffalo 4, Washington 1--Defenseman Mike Ramsey’s broke a 1-1 tie with a goal in the second period that sent the Sabres past the Capitals at Buffalo.

Buffalo’s Mike Foligno scored his 32nd goal midway through the first period, but Washington’s Gataen Duchesne evened the score minutes later.

After Ramsey’s goal, Paul Cyr and Dave Andreychuk also scored for the Sabres.

Boston 6, Vancouver 1--Ken Linseman and Barry Pederson each had a goal and two assists as the Bruins routed the Canucks at Vancouver.

Vancouver is winless in its last eight games (0-6-2).
