College Basketball Roundup : Manning Tires of Watching and Leads Kansas Past Oklahoma

It was a great game to watch, but not for Danny Manning.

Manning spent much of the first half on the bench with three fouls but scored 20 of his 25 points after intermission to lead third-ranked Kansas past No. 10 Oklahoma, 87-80, in a Big Eight game Monday night at Norman, Okla.

“I wanted to make something happen,” Manning, a 6-11 sophomore, said. “Being on the bench in the first half, the coaches talked to me, and it worked to my benefit.”

Oklahoma (23-6 overall, 8-5 in the Big Eight) lost its third straight game and had its 48-game home-court winning streak halted. The last time Oklahoma lost at home was to Kansas in 1983.

“This was as good a road win as I’ve ever been involved in,” Kansas Coach Larry Brown said. “I never felt comfortable.

“It was nice we were able to hold a lead with Danny on the bench in the first half. He came back fresh in the second half.”

Oklahoma overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to tie the score, 53-53, with 12:46 remaining before Manning got hot. He scored 10 of Kansas’ next 12 points, and the Jayhawks (27-3, 12-1) went on to a 69-61 lead with 6:31 left.

Darryl Kennedy, who had 22 points, scored nine during a 13-8 Oklahoma run that brought the Sooners within 77-74 with 1:50 left. Kansas made 8 of 9 free throws to sew up the victory.

Greg Dreiling of Kansas had 16 points and 15 rebounds.

Memphis State 86, South Carolina 73--William Bedford scored 17 points to lead the fourth-ranked Tigers past the Gamecocks in a Metro Conference game at Columbia, S.C.

South Carolina (12-13, 2-8) used a triangle-and-two defense to stymie the Tigers (24-3, 9-2) in the opening minutes and ran off to a 17-11 lead.

Andre Turner hit three straight jumpers to get Memphis State back into the game and Baskerville Holmes scored 10 points in a 20-9 surge that took the Tigers to a 43-28 halftime lead. The Gamecocks got no closer than 11 points in the second half.

Michael Foster had 21 points for South Carolina.

Louisville 66, South Alabama 55--Herbert Crook scored 13 points and the 14th-ranked Cardinals shot 73% from the field in the second half to beat the Jaguars at Louisville, Ky., for their seventh straight victory.

The Cardinals (22-7) had a 31-22 halftime lead and made it easy in the second half by hitting 16 of 22 shots.

Rickey Brown scored 15 points for the Jaguars (16-15).

Virginia Tech 92, Florida State 84--Dell Curry scored 36 points as the No. 18 Hokies beat the Seminoles in a Metro Conference game at Tallahassee, Fla.

Curry made 16 of 22 field-goal attempts and had 10 points in a three-minute span early in the second half to put Virginia Tech (21-7, 6-5) ahead to stay.

Keith Colbert added 19 points, and Tim Anderson and Johnny Fort scored 12 each for the Hokies.

LaRae Davis scored 15 points for the Seminoles (10-16, 2-9).

Pacific 65, San Jose State 61--Rich Anema scored 24 points to lead the Tigers past the Spartans in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at San Jose.
