One armed robbery suspect was wounded and three other men were captured unhurt by Torrance police at the end of a high-speed chase up the San Diego Freeway after a $400,000 holdup at a Peninsula Shopping Center jewelry store in Rolling Hills Estates. The pursuit began when officers spotted the alleged getaway car northbound on Hawthorne Boulevard at 166th Street and ended when the car collided with a police vehicle at the La Tijera Boulevard exit. The four suspects fled on foot. Officers fired two shots, hitting one of the men. He was taken to Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital where he was reported in stable condition. Identification of the suspects was withheld until sheriff’s officers could determine whether they were juveniles. Torrance police said the jewels were recovered.
