Orange County Roundup : Former Ram Youngblood Will Speak at Clinic

Jack Youngblood, former Los Angeles Ram All-Pro, will discuss defensive line play at the eighth Orange County Football Coaches’ Clinic Saturday morning at Rams Park.

Coaches scheduled to join Youngblood are Jack Elway of Stanford, Jim Sweeney of Fresno State and Dave Ogas of Rancho Santiago College.

Other guest speakers will include Jack Faulkner, Rams Director of Operations, and Darol Roundy, Orange County Coordinator of Officials. Roundy will offer an update on rule changes.

The clinic is free. Registration begins at 8 and a free buffet luncheon will follow the program.

Laguna Beach High School, expected to be one of the top three boys’ volleyball teams in the CIF Southern Section, opens its season Saturday night with an alumni game at 7 in the Artists’ gym.

The alumni team will feature Dusty Dvorak, setter on the 1984 Olympic team that won the gold medal, Lance Stewart, 1981 Southern Section Player of the Year and former Cal quarterback, and Leif Hanson, 1983 Southern Section Player of the Year.

Other alumni scheduled to compete are UCLA’s Mike Stafford and Stanford’s Steve Blue and Scott Fortune.

In the last 11 years, the Artists have won five Southern Section championships and nine league titles. More than 25 Laguna Beach players have earned college scholarships and three former Artists are among the 18 players named preseason collegiate All-Americans this year.

Prior to the alumni game, there will be a junior varsity game starting at 6 o’clock.

Tickets are $3 for adults and $1 for students with proceeds to benefit the Laguna Beach volleyball program.

The Cal State Fullerton men’s gymnastics team will meet 13th-ranked Cal in its final home meet of the season Friday night in Titan Gym at 7:30.

Last year, the Titans were selected to go to the NCAA championships instead of Cal, despite the fact that the Bears defeated Fullerton twice in three meetings.

Fullerton (4-17) is expected to be led by junior Russell Lacy, who has averaged 9.5 in floor exercises and 9.4 in the vault this season. Cal is 12-3.

More than 100 Southern California youths, aged 7 to 18, will participate in the sixth Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp to be held at Saddleback College March 25-29.

Wheelchair athletes from Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside and Orange counties will attend the camp. The athletes will receive professional instruction at no charge in the following sports: basketball, track and field, tennis, archery, swimming, scuba diving, fishing and weight training.

Pat Haden, former USC and Los Angeles Rams quarterback, will serve as honorary chairman for the event.

The UC Irvine crew will hold an open house and alumni day on Sunday, March 9, at the UCI boathouse on Shellmaker Island from noon to 2 p.m.

The Anteaters will be honoring the 1976 and 1966 crews on their 10th and 20th anniversaries, respectively.

The UCI band will perform and refreshments will be served.

The Los Angeles Rams Booster Club will hold its third Celebrity Golf and Tennis Classic to be held on April 14 at the Yorba Linda Country Club.

The golf competition will begin with a shotgun start at noon and be played in a scramble format. The tennis competition will be a round-robin doubles tournament.

Rams Bill Bain, Jeff Kemp, Johnnie Johnson and LeRoy Irvin are the co-chairmen of the event and several other Rams are expected to participate.

Entry fee for golf is $150 and $100 for tennis. The fee includes lunch, refreshments, and a banquet dinner in the evening.

The Academic Boosters’ Club of Edison High School will hold a 10-kilometer run at the Huntington Beach Pier on Sunday, April 6, at 8 a.m.

Proceeds from the race will benefit Edison students.

Joggers and fast walkers are encouraged to participate.

The pre-registered fees are $10 including a T-shirt or $7 without a T-shirt. The fees the day of the race are $13 and $11, respectively.

The course begins at the pier, travels along a bike path and access road, and then back to the pier, covering 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). Trophies, medals, and desk sets will be given in 12 male and 12 female categories, with a total of 132 prizes awarded. Aid stations will be located at the half-way point and finish line.
