Plane Wreckage Sought Off Pier
A Coast Guard cutter and divers from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department searched today for the wreckage of a light plane that crashed shortly before midnight half a mile from Newport Pier with four people aboard, a Coast Guard spokesman said.
Searchers found only a wheel and a flight manual from the single-engine craft, rented at John Wayne Airport on Sunday. The crash is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board. Names of the four--three men and a woman--were withheld pending notification of relatives.
