Bass, Corvina Top Southland Catches

Bass have been the big catch this week at many Southland reservoirs, according to landing operators. At Castaic Lake, Bill Cruse of Hawthorne caught a 16-pound 6-ounce bass in the upper lake.

The Red Hill area of the Salton Sea is a hot spot for large corvina. Jack Poole Jr. of Thermal caught one that weighed 26 pounds 4 ounces.

Good catches of crappie were reported at Lake Henshaw.

WILLOW BEACH--Striped bass fishing picking up. Darryl and Judy Shipp, Phoenix, 12-12 striper at 56-mile marker. Trout good at 63-mile marker up to 3-12.

LAKE MEAD--Largemouth bass picking up in brushy areas and rocky points, from 3 to 6 pounds. Striped bass fair from 20 to 50 feet in lower basin, 1 1/2 to 3 pounds. Larger fish in deeper water.

BULLHEAD CITY--Trout biting on Lake Mohave for trollers, average two-three pounds. A few striped bass and trout in Colorado River.

SALTON SEA--Corvina hot at Red Hill. Good tilapia bite at North Shore. Croaker biting at Bombay Beach.

LAKE CACHUMA--Bass picking up in shallow water.

LAKE CASITAS--Bass biting from 15 feet to surface on variety of baits. Trout good by trolling at 40 feet with several limits reported. Catfish slow.

LAKE PIRU--Bass good at north end, Reasnor cove and east side of lake. Trout good by trolling near dam.

CASTAIC LAKE--Bass best bet. William Huncuff, Sherman Oaks, 22-0 catfish in big lake on mackerel.

LAKE ISABELLA--Good for yellow, white and brown catfish. Bass fair around shore and Lime Dyke. Brown trout good at Paradise and Kissack coves. Bluegill and crappie slow.

SAN DIEGO LAKES--Otay: Bass best bet. Top catch: 14-5 bass, largest of season at lake. San Vicente: Good for bass and rainbow trout. Bluegill and crappie fair. Lake Miramar: Rainbow trout best bet. Top catch: 3-8 trout. Small bass improving. Sutherland: Good for bass. 12-5, 11-4, 10-11, 9-4 bass catches. El Capitan opened Thursday.

IRVINE LAKE--Bass picking up. Trout excellent on west shore. Catfish and crappie good.

LAKE IRWINDALE--Trout bet bet. Peck Choo, Hacienda Heights, limit of trout, largest 4-8; Steve McDowell, Baldwin Park, two trout weighing 7-8; Herb Cross, Azusa, trout limit, largest 4-0.

VAIL LAKE--Good for bass and bluegill. Catfish and crappie fair. Joe Mazzurco, Lemon Grove, 14-5 bass. Good limits of smaller bass reported.

LAKE HENSHAW--Crappie best bet. Bass picking up. Wilbur Moes, San Dimas, 12 crappie; Richard Littlefield, San Dimas, 25 crappie.

BISHOP AREA--Excellent trout fishing at Pleasant Valley Reservoir and Lower Owens River.
