Community College Baseball : Garcia Gets OCC Off to Right Start : Pitches One-Hitter for Pirates in 2-1 Victory Over Cypress
Longo Garcia pitched a one-hit complete game Thursday to lead Orange Coast College to a 2-1 win over Cypress in the Pirates’ South Coast Conference opener at OCC.
Garcia (2-1) allowed a leadoff single to Mark Baca, who later scored the Chargers’ only run when Garcia walked Pat Longo with the bases loaded.
The Pirates (9-4) scored their runs in the fourth inning. Joey James and Ralph Ramirez singled and James scored on a double by Mike Lujan. Ramirez, who had two hits, scored what turned out to be the winning run when Gordon Staub grounded out.
Garcia struck out seven and walked eight. Rob Jones (4-2) took the loss for Cypress.
In other South Coast Conference action:
Cerritos 7, Fullerton 2--John Marshall (1-0) pitched five strong innings in relief to lead the defending state champion Falcons at Cerritos.
Brett Barberi was 3 for 3 with an RBI for Cerritos (2-0, 9-4), and teammate Mark Nieto was 2 for 4.
Golden West 24, Compton 0--Keith Kaub had three hits, including two home runs, scored four runs and drove in three as the Rutlers (1-1, 5-5) embarrassed the Tartars at Compton.
Gary Renko scored five times for Golden West and Larry Salaets (1-0) pitched the first seven innings.
Mt. San Antonio 17, Saddleback 4--The Mounties took advantage of three Gauchos errors to score 15 unearned runs en route to an easy win at Walnut.
Mt. San Antonio scored 10 runs in the seventh inning after two were out. In the inning, Saddleback committed two errors and its pitchers walked five Mountie batters.
Bill Dodd (3-2) pitched 7 innings and took the loss for Saddleback.
