College Softball : Blankenship Throws No-Hitter, Chapman Splits
Chapman College’s Diane Blankenship pitched a no-hitter Friday to give the Panthers a split of their California Collegiate Athletic Assn. softball doubleheader against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo at Hart Park in Orange.
San Luis Obispo (1-1, 4-8) scored three runs in the fourth inning of the first game and went on to win, 3-1. Blankenship retired the first 13 batters she faced in the nightcap, walked one and then retired the last eight Mustangs. San Luis Obispo managed to hit only three balls out of the infield against the sophomore from Kennedy High School, who has pitched two no-hitters this season. Chapman is 1-1 and 10-5.
In the Nevada Las Vegas Tournament:
Cal State Fullerton dropped two of three games Friday. The Titans lost to Fresno State, 1-0; beat Oklahoma City, 9-0; and lost to Utah, 2-0. Fullerton meets Southern Utah State and South Florida today.
In community college action:
Rancho Santiago 2, Los Angeles Harbor 1--Kim Martin pitched a three-hitter to lead the Dons in nonconference play at Santa Ana.
Rancho Santiago scored single runs in the fourth and fifth before Los Angeles Harbor scored in the top of the seventh. Sandy Martinez, who was on base after hitting into a fielder’s choice, stole second and continued to third and then home on the catcher’s overthrow to score what turned out to be the winning run for Rancho Santiago in the fifth. Julie Hurtado singled in Lee Bladow in the fourth for the Dons’ first run.
The Dons (10-2) open South Coast Conference play Wednesday afternoon at Orange Coast.
Cypress 4, Pasadena 2--The Chargers won for the seventh time in a row. Debbie Hollar broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth with a double, and Tracy Morris followed with an RBI single. Shannon Foster pitched a five-hitter and won for Cypress (14-5).
