1-A Boys : Army-Navy to Meet Calipatria
The Army and Navy Academy of Carlsbad will be going for its second San Diego Section 1-A boys’ basketball title today at 12:30 when it faces Calipatria High at the Sports Arena.
Army-Navy (16-5), scrapped its way into the finals last week with a double-overtime win over previously unbeated La Jolla Country Day. That victory was especially gratifying for Warrior Coach John Maffucci because his two big men, center Chris Harroway and forward Nick Markowitz, fouled out before regulation time had expired.
To beat Calipatria (16-6), the Warriors will need Markowitz, the team leader who averages 22 points and 11.1 rebounds, for the entire game.
“He’s our swing man,” Maffucci said. “He can play forward and then move back to the guard’s spot and hit from there.”
The Hornets, undefeated champions of the Imperial County’s Mountain-Desert League, will offer a contrast to Army-Navy’s control game with its fast break offense.
“I expect them to run a lot,” Maffucci said. “They go for the fast break and the outlet pass real well.”
Leading Calipatria is 5-8 point guard Gabriel Castro, who was voted the Mountain-Desert League’s player of the year.
