Amtrak Subsidy
Bill Stall’s very good article (Opinion, Feb. 23), “Riding the Western Rails May Be a Comfortable Route to Extinction,” properly addresses the issue of the strange Reagan Administration’s attitude toward rail passenger service.
Yes, Amtrak service has never been better, and the federal subsidy to Amtrak has been steadily declining over the past five years; so why throw 14 years of investment in rail passenger service in the trash for the sake of a short-term political gain? For the record, wiping out the Amtrak subsidy would reduce the federal deficit by of 1%.
