Redondo Beach : Doerr Nominated for Seat

Mayor Barbara Doerr was one of two elected officials from Los Angeles County who were nominated last week for a seat on the state Coastal Commission.

Doerr and Baldwin Park Councilman Leo King, who currently serves on the panel, were nominated by the Los Angeles County City Selection Committee, an organization representing all 84 cities in the county.

Doerr, who hopes to replace King on the commission, was nominated even though her own City Council voted last week to support King for reappointment. The council had directed Doerr, who is the Redondo Beach delegate to the selection committee, to vote for King and for Redondo Beach Councilman Jack Chapman.

Each delegate was allowed to vote for two candidates. Doerr said she did vote for King, but since Chapman was not nominated, she cast her second vote for herself. Doerr sent letters last month to every delegate in the county asking for support at the meeting. Her name and King’s will now be forwarded to the state Senate Rules Committee, which will make the appointment. The committee must also consider nominations from the City Selection Committee of Orange County and the Board of Supervisors from both Los Angeles and Orange counties.

“I know my chances are probably slim,” Doerr said, “but I am going to do all I can to win.”

The Coastal Commission serves as a watchdog agency over the state’s 1,100-mile coastline, primarily by overseeing local government decisions that affect the coastline.
