68TH PHILHARMONIC SEASON SET

In his second year as music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Andre Previn will conduct 11 of the 24 weeks in the orchestra’s 1986-87 season of subscription concerts, it was announced Monday.

Previn will preside over the orchestra in stints from mid-November through the end of the season in April--in his first season (1985-86), he was in residence for only six weeks at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion--as well as in additional performances at UCLA in March, 1987.

Among guest conductors, Kurt Sanderling will open the season Oct. 16, 17 and 19 with a concert featuring violinist Isaac Stern; Pierre Boulez will appear with the orchestra in two weeks of concerts March 6-14, and principal guest conductor Simon Rattle will return to Los Angeles after his sabbatical year to conduct two different programs April 9-19.

Other guest conductors on the roster are David Atherton, Claus Peter Flor, Sir Charles Groves, Daniel Lewis and Esa-Pekka Salonen.

Among the scheduled soloists are pianists Alicia de Larrocha, Radu Lupu and Emanuel Ax; violinists Itzhak Perlman and Anne-Sophie Mutter, and singers Kathleen Battle and Hildegard Behrens.

This will be the Philharmonic’s 22nd season in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at the Music Center and its 68th season overall.

Highlights of the announced season:

--Previn’s conducting of the first West Coast staging of his music-theater piece, “Every Good Boy Deserves Favour,” written in collaboration with playwright Tom Stoppard, to be staged by Gordon Davidson, artistic director of the Mark Taper Forum, Dec. 18-21.

--A program in which soprano Hildegard Behrens, making her Philharmonic debut, will sing excerpts from Berg’s “Wozzeck” and the final scene from “Salome,” Nov. 20, 21, 23.

--Previn’s first collaboration with the L.A. Master Chorale, under its new music director, John Currie: performances of Prokofiev’s cantata, “Alexander Nevsky,” Nov. 3-6.

--A revival of Scriabin’s “Poem of Ecstasy,” to be conducted by Salonen, Jan. 29-Feb. 4, 1987.

--The return of Pierre Boulez, conducting works by Bartok, Berio, Stravinsky and himself, March 6-14, 1987.

--Two premieres: Luciano Berio’s orchestral transcription of Brahms’ F-minor Clarinet Sonata (with Philharmonic principal Michele Zukovsky as soloist) Nov 6-9, and the revised version of William Kraft’s “Contextures,” April 2-5, 1987.

--Away from the Music Center, Zubin Mehta, former music director of the Philharmonic, will lead the orchestra in the opening-night concert at the Orange County Performing Arts Center, Sept. 29. And Sanderling will lead a three-concert Beethoven Festival in the Wiltern Theatre, Oct. 5, 10 and 11.
