Women’s NIT : USIU Loses Fifth-Place Game

AMARILLO, Texas — Machelle Whitehead scored 24 points and Vanessa Wells added 18 as West Texas State defeated United States International University, 87-71, Saturday in the fifth-place game of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament.
West Texas, seeded seventh in the tournament, completed its season at 26-5, the best in its history. USIU ended the season at 24-9.
The West Texas victory offset a 36-point performance by the Gulls’ Toya Decree.
Von Tucker scored 13 of her 16 points in the first half as the Buffs opened a 46-40 halftime lead, and Whitehead scored 15 points in the second half.
USIU never got closer than three points after halftime, and West Texas led comfortably during the last eight minutes.
