Three people have drowned in the last three days in lakes at the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported. Two Los Angeles men drowned Sunday afternoon in Legg Lake after one, Francisco Gonzales, 22, tried to retrieve a soccer ball and the other, Sergio Rodriguez, 20, tried to rescue him when he appeared to be struggling. On Friday, Ricardo Vega, 18, drowned when he tried to swim across the lake with three friends. Vega got half-way across when he began to drown, and attempts by his companions to rescue him were unsuccessful. Swimming is prohibited in the area.
