Oxley Holds Off Faria to Capture Speedway’s Scratch Main Event
Brad Oxley of San Clemente led wire-to-wire to take the four-lap scratch main event Friday in speedway motorcycle racing in front of 5,836 spectators at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.
Mike Faria of Colton pressed Oxley at almost every turn but was never able to improve on his second-place standing. Robert Pfetzing of Santa Ana was third. and national champion Alan Christian, who fell in the second lap, did not complete the race and finished last.
Rich Sweaney of Riverside was the wire-to-wire winner of the five-lap handicap main event. Mark Dwyer of Riverside was second, and Rary Hicks, also of Riverside, was third.
Kevin Krugh was the second division main winner, and David Calais captured the third division main.
