San Diego
A 22-year-old San Diego man was presumed dead Thursday after a search by rescue officials for more than an hour failed to find his body in the ocean.
The man, whom fire and lifeguard officials wouldn’t identify, became tired while body surfing around the Sunset Cliffs area, at the foot of Osprey Street, fire officials said.
A friend climbed from the water and sought help, said Logan Bellows, a San Diego Fire Department spokesman.
Lifeguards saw the man about 7 a.m., treading water 25 yards from the cliffs. Bellows said the man submerged before lifeguards could reach him.
Helicopters, patrol boats and firefighters, searched the area for about 90 minutes with no success.
