TWA Weighs Safety Surcharge
NEW YORK — TWA said today that it is considering a passenger surcharge to defray the cost of intensified anti-terrorism security measures, one day after Pan American World Airways announced a similar plan.
New York-based Pan Am, which plans to serve 39 overseas points this summer, more than any other U.S. airline, said it will seek a $5-per-passenger surcharge to compensate for added security expenses. TWA did not did not give a dollar figure for its surcharge. Other major U.S. carriers that fly internationally said they have no intention of imposing a security surcharge at this time.
