The Nation : Bid to Bar AIDS Victims
The government proposed to bar immigration into the United States by people suffering from AIDS and to give consular officials the discretionary right to require medical tests for tourists or students seeking entry if AIDS infection is suspected. In a proposed regulation published in the Federal Register, the Centers for Disease Control said AIDS, or acquired immune deficiency syndrome, should be added to the list of seven “dangerous contagious diseases” that are grounds for refusing entry to the United States. The proposal, which is now subject to public comment, would affect primarily refugees, foreigners seeking permanent immigration and others who already must undergo a medical examination.
