The Glamour of Floral Headdress Ball
“There’s a lot of glamour tonight,” Kenneth Norris proclaimed. Not the least, at Las Floristas’ Floral Headdress Ball, was Norris’ announcement that he was giving another $100,000 to support Las Floristas Handicapped Children’s Clinics.
Carolyn Stockwell, sitting with Randy and a raft of friends, was almost giddy with pleasure over the way the Beverly Hilton International Ballroom looked. Bowers of flowers were everywhere, mixed with a touch of blue neon. It had been created with Flower Pavilion and the assistance of the Southern California Floral Assn. At the entrance was the 15-foot bronzed Statue of Liberty, saluting the “American Dream” theme. Certainly admiring were ball chairman Ollie (Mrs. Donn) Lynn, president Maggie (Mrs. Thomas) Simms, and honorary ball co-chairmen Harlyne (Mrs. Kenneth) Norris and Dr. William L. Allen, father of Judi (Mrs. Welton) Becket, who coordinated the show with producer Stan Mazin.
What amazed the black-tie crowd (many of the women guests wore wreaths in their hair) was the way Las Floristas mannequins marched, waltzed and paraded in the competition. In the “People’s Choice” fun, Mrs. Taylor C. Richardson won first prize, lilting in white flowers and stars designed by Don Honold. Mrs. Lud Renick was second in the patriotic “Nations United” crafted by Tamara Seilbach. Mrs. Lawrence E. Wessel, modeling the floral eagle designed by Modesto Busto, took third prize. Backs were straight; not a one wavered ‘neath the huge headpieces.
Misha and Cipa Dichter, the highly regarded pianists, will be in concert Sunday at the Gindi Auditorium of the University of Judaism for a gala benefiting the university’s cultural programs. Michael Schwab is chairman, assisted by Brian Adler, Marjorie Platt and Marvin Smalley. The concert will be followed by an elegant candlelight dinner.
Friends Eleanore Phillips Colt, Palmer Ducommun, Molly Barnes, the Michael Fasmans and her parents, the Keith Pattengills of Santa Fe, will be in the crowd Tuesday when Brooke Pattengill presents her “The Santa Fe Collection Photography” at the Frank McDonald Gallery opening reception. Part of the funds from sales, Brooke said, will provide free art supplies and classes to barrio children.
Many of the city’s renowned chefs will gather on the Roof Garden of Le Bel Age Hotel in West Hollywood on Sunday to serve their specialties and benefit the National Kidney Foundation of Southern California. Roy Yamaguchi of restaurant 385 North is chef coordinator of 29 participating food establishments, including 7th Street Bistro, La Toque, St. Estephe and Trumps. The idea will be to sample and sup some of California’s finest wines from 18 different vintners. Co-chairing with Dr. David A. Goldstein is Yona Nadelman. Wayne Rogers is honorary chairman. Tickets are $100, and working hard at it are Dr. Kenneth and Sandy Bleifer, Mary Jo Chism, Lois Esformes, Glenda and Paul Feinsmith, Don Ferris and Karlene Garber.
The Verne Orrs will be in the spotlight today when the Pasadena Arts Council hosts its Gold Crown Reception at the Shakespeare Club. Co-chairmen of the reception are Nina Cash and Elizabeth Pomeroy. Mrs. Everett A. Palmer Jr. is patron chairman and Mary Lou Jordan will preside as head of the trustees, giving awards to Gold Crown winners David Schnabel, Charles Lewis, Jorge Mester, Diane Wittry, Stephen J. Cannell, Elizabeth Mills, Mrs. Ulric B. Bray, Milli and Ned Estey, Jean and Bill Taylor and the Pasadena Area Liberal Arts Center.
