College Baseball : Deushane Gets No-Hitter as SCC Sweeps Biola

Southern California College pitcher Mark Deushane threw a no-hitter as the Vanguards defeated Biola, 4-0, in the first game of a National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics District 3 doubleheader Saturday at SCC.

Deushane (8-3), a junior, struck out five and walked seven. Ron Nelson provided the Vanguards’ offensive punch by going 2 for 3, including a two-run home run in the first inning.

The Vanguards swept Biola by taking the second game, 6-4, behind a strong performance in relief by Brian Otten.

Otten was brought in after Biola, trailing by two runs, had loaded the bases with no outs. But Otten ended the rally when the first batter he faced hit into a force play at the plate and the next hit into a game-ending double play.

The wins means SCC (15-5, 34-13) will enter Thursday’s first round of the NAIA playoffs as the Division 3 No. 1 seed.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. action:

Riverside 11-8, Chapman 4-3--Riverside’s Mark Young went 5 for 6 in the first game, including two home runs and four RBIs. Young was 2 for 4 in the second game with a double and one RBI. Mike Williams added a two-run homer for Riverside (15-9, 28-10) in the second game. Chapman (12-16, 20-30) got a strong performance from Darren Nelson, who went 5 for 8 in the two games, scoring a run in the second game. Mike Cruz hit a solo homer in the second game.

UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton, playing in Northern California, had their Saturday games rained out and will play doubleheaders today.

The Anteaters play San Jose State, with the first game scheduled to start at noon. Fullerton’s games against the University of Pacific begin at 1 p.m.
