Cincinnati Post reporter Bruce Schoenfeld, 24, charged Cincinnati Reds pitcher John Denny with simple assault, terroristic threats and harassment, all misdemeanors, in a private criminal complaint filed with the Philadelphia district attorney.
Denny is not subject to arrest or any restriction on his movements, a spokeswoman for the district attorney said.
Schoenfeld told police that 2 1/2 hours before the Reds played the Philadelphia Phillies Wednesday night at Veterans Stadium, Denny grabbed him by the neck, pushed him against the concrete wall of a tunnel, banged his head two or three times and threw him to the ground. Schoenfeld said he had done nothing to provoke Denny, who denied touching the writer.
A hearing will be held before a trial commissioner, who will attempt to resolve the dispute, the spokeswoman said. If that fails, Denny will face criminal charges in Municipal Court. No hearing date has been set.
