San Diego Roundup : Toreros Sign Hartnell Star Munn

The University of San Diego men’s basketball team has signed Marty Munn to a national letter of intent.

Munn, a 6-foot 6-inch forward, was third in the state in scoring and rebounding last year at Salinas’ Hartnell Community College. He averaged 23.4 points and 13 rebounds per game.

Munn earned all-state and All-America honorable mention honors last year. He is the fourth and final recruit signed by the Toreros.

The United States International University men’s and women’s basketball teams have each signed a player to national letters of intent.

The men’s team signed Dexter Magee, a 6-7, 220-pound forward from Saddleback College. He is the ninth player signed by Gull Coach Gary Zarecky.

Caroline Davis, a 5-10 forward from Central Arizona College, has signed to play for the women’s team. Davis was a first-team community college All-American selection and led her team to a 30-2 record. She averaged 13.9 points last season and 14.7 points as a freshman.

A world-class field has entered the Carlsbad 5-kilometer road race June 1. Africans Michael Musyoki, winner of the Buick 10K here in March, Suleiman Nyambui, Peter Koech and Yobes Ondiecki have entered the invitational race. Musyoki was the silver medalist in the 10,000 meters and Nyambui won the silver in the 5,000 meters at the 1984 Olympic Games. Steve Scott of Fallbrook has also entered.

Joan Benoit, winner of the 1984 Olympic marathon, heads the women’s field.

Because of the strong field and fast course, race director Tim Murphy believes that the world record for the 5K on the road will be broken. The race is offering $21,000 in prize money, the largest purse offered anywhere for a 5K and the largest ever in San Diego County. The open race begins at 7:45 a.m. and the invitational begins at 9 a.m. For more information call, 483-9501.

The Rolando Little League will play host to a team from Tecate, Mexico, Saturday at 5 p.m. The game is designed “to promote friendship and understanding among youth,” according to league director Jim Fraley.

The 22-player team will arrive today and attend the Padres’ game against the Montreal Expos tonight. The team will go to the San Diego Zoo Saturday afternoon before the game and return to Tecate on Sunday.

The trip is sponsored by the College Center Covenant Church and the Rolando Little League. The game is free to the public and will be played at the Rolando Little League field at La Mesa.

The Friends of Balboa Stadium will have a fund-raising banquet Thursday at the Town and Country Convention Center to raise money to renovate the stadium. The group needs $600,000 to build seating for 15,000, locker room facilities, restrooms and refreshment facilities. For ticket information, call 277-0128.

The San Diego Nomads will play their first game in the Western Soccer Alliance Sunday night against the defending champion San Jose Earthquakes at 7:30 in Balboa Stadium. The Nomads are a youth team based in San Diego. It is their first year in the 2-year-old league.
