Norway’s Grete Waitz outran Olympic champion Joan Benoit Samuelson to win the women’s division of San Francisco’s annual Bay to Breakers, the 75th running of the world’s oldest annual foot race.
Waitz, second in the Olympics, set a women’s course record of 38:40.5 for the 7.46 miles (12 kilometers). Benoit, running despite a sore Achilles tendon, finished in 39:09.8--ahead of the record 39:54.8 she set last year.
