Jurors in the Sagon Penn murder trial resumed deliberations Monday after a Superior Court judge told them to wait until they have reached a verdict on all six charges before announcing their decision in public.

On Friday, the jury said it had reached a unanimous decision on one of three attempted murder charges filed against Penn, who is accused of murder in the fatal shooting of San Diego Police Agent Thomas Riggs and attempted murder in the shootings of Agent Donovan Jacobs and Sarah Pina-Ruiz, a civilian ride-along who accompanied Riggs.

Penn also is charged with attempted murder for running over Jacobs with the officer’s police car, grand theft for taking Riggs’ revolver and auto theft. The jury reached a verdict on the attempted murder charge related to Penn driving the vehicle.

The jurors asked Judge Ben W. Hamrick on Friday if he wanted one verdict at a time or all of them together, but they were sent home because of a bomb scare before Hamrick could hold a hearing in the presence of both attorneys.

Hamrick said Monday that he may take any verdicts on Friday before the jury breaks for a three-day weekend. One juror, Vernell Hardy, who is scheduled to deliver a baby on June 1, intends to return to deliberations after a five-day break. Hamrick said he may put the verdicts in a sealed envelope. This would prevent jurors from having to start deliberations over again in the event Hardy did not return and is replaced by an alternate juror.

On Monday, the jury requested a yardstick and a transcript of a statement Pina-Ruiz gave to police on the night of the March 31, 1985, shootings.
