Students Won’t Be Bused

About 100 Johnston Elementary School students who were scheduled to be bused to another school in Norwalk in September will remain at Johnston at least through the 1986-87 school year.

Board members for the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District voted Monday to keep the students where they are until further studies are completed. The school board approved a plan in April to change attendance boundaries for various schools and to reopen a closed school. The district had been studying options to deal with a projected enrollment increase expected over the next five years.

The elementary students, who live in an attendance zone bordered by Imperial Highway and Firestone and Pioneer boulevards, were to be assigned to Waite Elementary School on Norwalk Boulevard. Howard Rainey, director of business services, said that after the district re-evaluated the changes, school officials “felt they would probably have to be moved again” within a year. The district will study the issue further in order to minimize disruption to students.
