BRIEFLY : Radinsky Signs His Coach as Agent

Mike Scyphers, who already serves as coach, teacher and owner of a batting-cage facility, has added one more job description to his resume. He has become a player agent.

The Simi Valley High baseball coach will represent Pioneer pitcher Scott Radinsky in contract negotiations with the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox on Monday selected Radinsky in the third round of baseball’s amateur draft.

Scyphers and Radinsky are scheduled to meet tonight with Dwayne Schaeffer, Chicago’s supervisor of scouting for the West Coast. Scyphers has never negotiated a professional contract before, but said he has done his homework. He consulted with Ron Stillwell and Terry Tackett, fathers of professional players Kurt Stillwell and Jeff Tackett, who negotiated their sons’ first contracts.

“I was nervous when the Radinsky family first asked me, but I feel confident now,” Scyphers said. “I’ve learned all the dos and don’ts and I have an idea of what to ask for.”

Radinsky helped Simi Valley to a 26-4 record and a berth in the Southern Section 4-A Division semifinals. The senior left-hander was 14-1 with a 1.18 earned-run average. He struck out a school-record 180 batters in 100 innings.

If Radinsky signs with the White Sox, he will report to the team’s Rookie League team in Sarasota, Fla., later this month.

CSUN Women Win ‘Iron’ Trophy

Cal State Northridge won the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.’s Iron Woman Trophy for the second consecutive season, a spokesman for the conference announced this week.

Northridge women’s teams won conference championships in volleyball, softball, swimming and tennis. CSUN had 28 points in a system that awards points according to a school’s final conference standing in a sport. Pomona was second with 24 points.

The Northridge men’s program was second in the Iron Man standings behind Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The Matadors’ only conference championship this year was in soccer.

ARC Holds Summer League Sign-ups

The 12th American Roundball Corporation summer basketball league will hold sign-ups Sunday at 10 a.m. Boys from the fifth grade through college are eligible for five divisions broken down by age and skill level.

Sign-ups for the college division, which is being offered for the first time, begin at noon. Games for all divisions other than college begin June 21 at North Hollywood High. College division games begin June 29 at Valley College.
