NEW POST FOR YOUTH CONCERTS DIRECTOR WORBY
Rachael Worby, youth concerts conductor with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, has been named music director of the Wheeling (W. Va.) Symphony.
Worby, who said she will continue to lead youth concerts in Los Angeles “for at least next year,” reportedly becomes the only woman to head a major symphony orchestra in the United States.
In addition to her connections with the L.A. Philharmonic (where she will lead a Symphonies-for-Youth program on Jan. 17 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, plus numerous in-school programs and the annual Peninsula Music Fair events), Worby will continue in her post as conductor of the Carnegie Hall Youth Concerts in New York.
“I wanted this post (in Wheeling) very much,” she commented, “because I didn’t want to be typecast as a youth conductor. And, I wanted an orchestra of my own.”
