Proposed Seaver-to-Yankees Deal Hits a Snag

A trade sending pitcher Tom Seaver of the Chicago White Sox to the New York Yankees is off, at least for now, because the teams couldn’t agree on terms, White Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said Saturday.

Seaver, 41, has expressed a desire to end his career near his Connecticut home, and newspapers in New York and Chicago reported Saturday that a deal between the White Sox and Yankees was nearly completed.

“We have a basic disagreement on what Tom Seaver’s value would be to the Yankees and we couldn’t agree on what we’d get back from them,” Reinsdorf said.

The New York Daily News and the Chicago Tribune both said the deal would involve Seaver and another Chicago pitcher--perhaps Bill Dawley or Dave Schmidt--for New York reliever Brian Fisher. The White Sox also expressed interest in a top Yankee prospect, shortstop Carlos Martinez.

The Daily News said that, in addition to the Yankees, the Boston Red Sox were interested in Seaver. The Red Sox had reportedly offered outfielder Tony Armas, the newspaper said.
