Statue Named Best U.S. Symbol in Poll
WASHINGTON — Most Americans who responded to a survey released Saturday chose the Statue of Liberty as the best symbol of the United States, and said that individual freedom, or liberty, was the major reason for the country’s greatness.
Of 1,000 people surveyed by the Roper Organization for U.S. News & World Report and Cable News Network, 88% cited freedom as a main factor in America’s greatness.
The statue was chosen by 57% of those surveyed as the most important national symbol. The flag was next, at 46%, 20% chose the Liberty Bell, 18% picked the White House, 6% named the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument was chosen by 4%.
