Peru’s Paramilitary Chief Fired

LIMA, Peru — The Peruvian government today dismissed the chief of the country’s paramilitary Republican Guard police force three days after President Alan Garcia accused its members of executing at least 100 prison inmates.
An Interior Ministry decree said Gen. Maximo Andres Martinez was sent into early retirement. On Friday, Garcia accused the Republican Guard, Peru’s third-biggest police force, of executing at least 100 accused Maoist guerrilla inmates at the Lima Lurigancho prison after they surrendered in a revolt 11 days ago.
