Howard Gift

As a member of the board of trustees of Howard University in Washington, D.C., I want to express my sincere thanks to you for publishing the story (June 15) on the $1-million contribution to the university by retired Superior Court Judge Earl C. Broady and his wife Anna to establish an endowed chair at the School of Law.

The story was especially newsworthy because it pointed out a “rags and riches” story by a black man who was determined to succeed despite tremendous odds. Furthermore, the size of the gift, which is the largest ever made to the university by an individual, is an indication of the character of Judge Broady and his desire to help improve the legal education of students for years to come. This is the first endowed chair at the university.

Howard University was founded by an act of Congress on March 2, 1867, and has approximately 42,500 alumni in the United States, Europe and Africa.

I am hopeful that your story will inspire alumni and friends of the university to seriously consider becoming donors.
