Zulu warriors from two rival villages in South Africa’s Valley of 1,000 Hills near Durban used knives, spears and guns made of pipes in a battle that left 31 dead, police said. They said it appears that followers of Chief Gwala attacked a group led by Chief Ngcobo from a nearby village and that Ngcobo’s men counterattacked, shooting and hacking to death 25 men in Gwala’s village. In another development, a spokesman for South African President Pieter W. Botha said Botha has agreed to the second meeting in a month with Bishop Desmond Tutu, the Nobel peace laureate and a leading opponent of apartheid. It was not immediately clear where and when they will meet.
