San Diego Mayor Holds 1st Meeting on 40th Birthday
SAN DIEGO — On her 40th birthday, Mayor Maureen O’Connor took charge of her first City Council meeting Monday, one week after she was sworn in as this city’s first woman mayor.
The meeting proved to be a tough initiation. During a sometimes unruly hearing on a proposal to name a downtown street for slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., O’Connor was forced to pound her gavel and warn, “I’m going to run this meeting.”
A councilwoman from 1971 to 1979, O’Connor was elected last month to serve out the remaining 29 months of former Mayor Roger Hedgecock’s term. He was forced from office after being convicted of 13 felonies related to campaign finances.
