Manager of Royals to Undergo Surgery for Brain Tumor
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Royals Manager Dick Howser, who was admitted to a Kansas City hospital the day after he led the American League to a 3-2 victory in the All Star Game, will undergo surgery next week for a brain tumor.
Howser, 50, was admitted to St. Luke’s Hospital Wednesday evening complaining of a stiff neck and headaches. He missed the Royals’ game Thursday night.
“Neurosurgical consultation and a CAT scan of the head revealed a tumor of the left frontal lobe of the brain,” Public Relations Director Dean Vogelaar said today. Vogelaar said it will not be known until after surgery whether the tumor is malignant.
Mike Ferraro, the third base coach, has been named interim manager of the Royals.
