Congress is investigating charges that the Federal Aviation Administration improperly fired controllers who were on vacation or leave during a 1981 strike, then altered personnel records to cover up the errors, it was reported. The House subcommittee on investigations and oversight subpoenaed records at the FAA Traffic Control Center in Aurora, Ill., where 454 of about 500 controllers were fired, the Chicago Tribune reported. Philip Wood, a lawyer who represents about 120 fired controllers at the Aurora facility, said that FAA officials doctored work records to make them conform to the notices.
