Dio Shipp, a baseball and football standout at Canyon High, has accepted a scholarship to Nevada Reno, Canyon football coach Harry Welch reported. Nevada Reno offered him the scholarship after the Daily News all-star game July 18 at Pierce College. Shipp, a member of The Times’ baseball All-Valley second team and an All-Southern Section linebacker, had reportedly accepted a scholarship to Cal Lutheran to play football and baseball.

Andrew McNaughton of Northridge finished second overall at the Castaic Triathlon on Saturday, completing the one-mile swim, 25-mile bicycle ride and 10K run in 1:52.16. Brad Kearns of Woodland Hills was third overall in 1:53.45.

Brian Weintraub of Sherman Oaks placed fourth in the 25-29 age group, timing 2:01.05. Weintraub is preparing for the Ventura Triathlon on Aug. 16. He won the event last year.

Dave Berganio of Sylmar shot a two-round total of 136 to win the state final of the Insurance Youth Tournament at El Dorado Country Club on Monday. Jimmy Chang of Westlake finished second at 143. Both golfers qualified for the national tournament in Springfield, Ohio, Aug. 7-12.

Melissa Gurney of Palos Verdes defeated Barbara Gerken of Thousand Oaks, 6-1, 6-3, to win the women’s singles title at a $75,000 professional tennis tournament Sunday in Berkeley. Gurney earned $9,000 with the victory. Gerken won $4,100.

Barry Hancock and Jeff Gisea of Santa Ana defeated Darrin Pleasant of Thousand Oaks and Jeff Walendy of Westlake Village, 6-1, 6-2, to win the boys 18-and-under doubles title at the National Public Parks Junior Championships in Long Beach on Sunday.
