Record rain in Milwaukee drowned an elderly woman and an 11-year-old boy, flooded basements and stranded travelers. Fifty to 70 homes were evacuated in suburban Wauwatosa, where the Menominee River overflowed. The Weather Service said 6.78 inches of rain fell in 24 hours, breaking the city’s record of 5.7 inches, set in 1917. About 400 people were stranded when Mitchell International Airport was closed. The 80-year-old woman apparently fell and drowned in two feet of water that had flooded her basement apartment. The boy was playing in a park when he stepped into the Kinnickinnic River to wash his feet and was swept away, officials said.
