No Big Words, Please

Daniel Balderston’s review of “I the Supreme” (The Book Review, July 13) obviously was well thought out. I enjoyed his sharp observations and the ideas he offered. However, the English language is so rich in words common to most intelligent readers that there is little need to lean on terms we seldom use in spoken language.

Although his choices are certainly technically correct, I do wish he’d selected others than solipsistic , amanuensis , interlocutor , Janus - faced , authorial discourse . On the other hand, oversimplistic words would be a greater sin than his. What I’d like to read would be words he would speak if he were talking to me, an ordinary type of a guy.
